In the US environmental release of gene-drive modified organisms will fall under the Coordinated Framework for the regulation of Biotechnology with three responsible federal agencies:

• the Environmental Protection Agency,
• the Food and Drug Administration,
• the U.S. Department of Agriculture

— based on the intended use of the product (e.g., suppressing a target species or lowering disease transmission).
